Princess
Meet Princess, who arrived in Italy in 1999 from Nigeria. Deceived by her smugglers, she was forced into sexual exploitation and trafficking. In 2000, she denounced her persecutors and co-founded an anti-trafficking NGO. With a 20-year-long experience in the sector, she is a point of reference for the protection of women who survived trafficking.
THE COURAGE OF RESILIENCE
Back in 2000, the streets were rough.
I was deceived, lost in an unknown country and exploited in my body, but I did not resign.
I had the courage to report my madame to Italian law.
I ended up in the court, and it was me in front of her, with a judge. I told them everything, and she received the punishment she deserved.
The fight for Justice
I have kept fighting for justice ever since. I founded a non-profit organization called PIAM Onlus with the girls who were sharing my experience. We were a cohesive group and received of some amazing people. We are still there, fighting. Our organization is engaged in several projects, all aimed at helping the women who survived trafficking embark on a new life path. My role is mainly cultural mediation, and I am the responsible of the street unit, the one who reaches out to the women walking the streets.
With PIAM onlus, we design education paths for women and their children in Nigeria. We send the women to vocational training so that they can learn a craft. We insist on their professionalisation and skill education, which we try to enhance with local partnerships. If the mothers can bring bread to the table, their kids will also be able to go to school. This is our ultimate objective: supporting them to create a life in their country.
