Nadja and Peter
They wanted to have a child
Adopting a child
After several years of trying to have a child, Nadja and Peter realised they would be unable to have biological children. As a result, they decided to adopt.
That year in Slovenia, just 16 children were available for adoption, and they were not selected as adopting parents in the official process. This led them to decide to explore the possibility of adopting a child from abroad.
International adoption
During their online searches, they found an agency that offers assistance and support to prospective parents interested in adopting a child from abroad. The international adoption process involved a fee, and the agency promised to guide them through every step, including finding a child and handling the necessary paperwork for the adoption.
Adoption agency
After careful consideration, they decided to contact the adoption agency. The agency promptly informed them about a 2-year-old child living in an orphanage in Africa who was available for adoption after having lost both of his parents. They were told that adopting him would provide him with a better life.
Overjoyed by this news, they quickly arranged the payment and completed the necessary paperwork to bring the child to Europe.
Falsified documentation and abduction
A few days later, they received information that the child was on their way to Europe. The agency had handled all the arrangements, including the travel and child documentation, so they did not have to travel to Africa to meet the child or arrange the adoption at an orphanage.
When the child arrived and they began obtaining the necessary documents, the authorities discovered that some of the paperwork had been falsified.
Investigation
The investigation uncovered that the child had been kidnapped from a small village in Africa, and been trafficked and sold without his parents’ consent.
The agency involved was part of an organised criminal group that facilitated illegal adoptions of children from Africa to Europe.
Child protection and prosecution
The child was returned safely to his parents, and the case was prosecuted as a human trafficking offence.
