Migratie en vluchtelingen zijn onderwerpen met een enorme mondiale betekenis. Hoewel de oorzaken divers zijn, zoals bijvoorbeeld economische redenen, oorlogen, milieuproblemen, etc., bestaat er een gemeenschappelijk verlangen naar een beter leven. Nu steeds meer mensen vluchten en migreren, wordt het belangrijker om een verantwoorde manier te vinden om met migratie om te gaan. Media spelen hierbij een belangrijke rol. Het vervult waardevolle sociale functies in de socialisatie die op beslissende wijze de normen en waarden van een samenleving vormgeven. In de media worden migratiegroepen specifiek per geval genoemd en vaak in een probleemgerichte context.<\/p>\n

Media worden de vierde macht genoemd vanwege hun essenti\u00eble politieke functie. Door hun inhoud dienen verschillende media als een indirecte ervaring en dragen zo aanzienlijk bij aan de vorming van vooroordelen, waarden en normen. Als gevolg daarvan oefenen zij een enorme invloed uit in de omgang met mensen die vluchten en migreren. Dit werk heeft tot doel het bewustzijn te vergroten over het aandachtiger onderzoeken en in vraag stellen van media-inhoud over migratie en vlucht.<\/p>\n

Mediavertegenwoordiging van migratie en vlucht<\/strong><\/p>\n

De representatie van migratie en vlucht in de media is een verhit onderwerp in het maatschappelijke en politieke discours. Het is een emotioneel en belangrijk politiek gebied dat wordt gekenmerkt door afwijkende meningen. De media spelen een cruciale rol bij het vormen van meningen en oordelen,
die een grote invloed uitoefenen op onze samenleving en politiek. <\/p>\n

Helaas maakt de vertegenwoordiging in de media, als het gaat om het onderwerp van een immigrantenmaatschappij, nauwelijks gebruik van een rationele benadering van consensusvorming, maar bevordert en verstevigt zij eerder conflicten in de publieke sfeer. Ze richten zich steeds meer op symbolen als de hoofddoek en de moskee, en op emotioneel geladen integratiedebatten als terrorisme en vluchtelingencrises. Het is verontrustend dat deze publieke en mediaportretten een staat van duurzaamheid bereiken en bijna ge\u00efnstitutionaliseerd worden. (Arslan, 2019, p. 172.)<\/p>\n

Media sturen de perceptie van migratieprocessen. Naast tal van andere functies vervullen media een integratiefunctie. In de praktijk wordt echter het tegenovergestelde waargenomen. In plaats van integratie bevorderen ze conflictlijnen en segregatie. Uit wetenschappelijk onderzoek blijkt dat de berichtgeving over bepaalde migrantengroepen, zoals die van het islamitische geloof of vluchtelingen, over het algemeen specifiek en vraaggericht is, gedomineerd door een probleemgerichte aanpak. <\/p>\n

Het is een uitdaging om aan deze negatief gevormde symbolen en classificaties te ontsnappen, omdat de getroffen migrantengroepen zelf weinig ruimte voor articulatie hebben. In plaats daarvan worstelen ze voortdurend met toeschrijvingen en discoursen in de politiek. Het gebrek aan betekenisvolle participatierechten resulteert steeds meer in een machtsasymmetrie op politiek en mediagebied. <\/p>\n

Dit betekent dat individuen niet dezelfde handelingsmogelijkheden hebben. De getroffen individuen worden geclassificeerd op basis van toegeschreven kenmerken, waardoor ze worden onderscheiden van de rest van de samenleving. Door deze machtsasymmetrie ervaren vluchtelingen en migrantengroepen homogenisering. In informele termen zou dit \u2018stereotypering\u2019 worden genoemd (Arslan, 2019, p. 173).<\/p>\n

Het is van cruciaal belang om te benadrukken dat media een beslissende rol spelen bij het construeren van de werkelijkheid. Media-informatie bepaalt in belangrijke mate het wereldbeeld van mensen. Daarom is de manier waarop de media hun inhoud weergeven uiterst relevant.<\/p>\n

De praktijk leert dat berichtgeving over buitenlanders en vluchtelingen doorgaans plaatsvindt wanneer de onderwerpen zo dramatisch en sensationeel mogelijk zijn. Bijgevolg is de berichtgeving gevuld met geweld, chaos, brutaliteit en wanorde. Hierdoor construeren de media een realiteit waarin migranten en vluchtelingen worden afgeschilderd als \u2018gevaarlijk\u2019, \u2018zielig\u2019 of \u2018nutteloos\u2019. Termen als \u2018islamisering\u2019 of \u2018stroom van asielzoekers\u2019 worden bedacht en gebruikt. Deze termen reproduceren en verspreiden stereotypen en angsten (Arslan, 2019, p. 174).<\/p>\n

De gevolgen manifesteren zich zowel binnen de ontvangende samenleving, waar wrok jegens vluchtelingen en migranten tot uiting komt, als binnen de migrantenbevolking die gevoelens van uitsluiting ervaart. Omdat berichtgeving in de media over dit onderwerp wordt waargenomen
als indirecte ervaring vormt en structureert het de percepties die de ontvangende samenleving heeft over de immigrantensamenleving. De bevolking voelt zich gevalideerd in hun vooroordelen, waardoor cognitieve stereotypen worden versterkt en gevormd. Het gevolg is dat er sprake is van discriminerend gedrag.<\/p>\n

Zoals eerder vermeld, hebben deze negatief gedomineerde representaties een sterke invloed op de integratieprocessen van een samenleving. Migranten worden gezien als een \u2018probleem\u2019. Sociaal-economische crises worden zo omgezet in etnische crises. Dit betekent dat sociale problemen worden vervormd door middel vanculturalisering en etnicisering. <\/p>\n

De media interpreteren conflicten vaak als religieuze en etnische kwesties. Deze bevooroordeelde benadering vereenvoudigt niet alleen de zaken voor het dominante bevolkingssysteem, maar depolitiseert ze ook. Door de oorsprong in de berichtgeving te benadrukken, worden acties en gebeurtenissen geassocieerd met nationaliteit. <\/p>\n

Er worden minderheden gecre\u00eberd, versterkt door de bevoorrechte meerderheid. Dit fenomeen stigmatiseert niet alleen de \u2018buitenlanders\u2019, maar construeert ook een \u2018nationale identiteit\u2019. De negatieve classificatie van migranten heeft tot doel zichzelf en \u201cde gemeenschap\u201d onder de aandacht te brengen. Racistische tendensen worden zo gepromoot en versterkt. Media spelen een centrale rol in intellectueel, institutioneel en alledaags racisme (Arslan, 2019, p. 174 e.v.).<\/p>\n

Conclusie en persoonlijke mening<\/strong><\/p>\n

In mijn directe omgeving zie ik de enorme invloed die media hebben op vooroordelen over migratie. Persoonlijk vind ik het verdrietig om mensen negatief over migratie te horen spreken, vooral als het gaat om individuen die geen directe ervaring of contact hebben met deze kwestie. Ze zijn zich niet bewust van de uitdagingen waarmee mensen worden geconfronteerd bij het opbouwen van een nieuw leven in een vreemd land. Ik vind eenzijdige berichtgeving gevaarlijk en bevorderlijk voor het bevorderen van racisme. Daarom geloof ik dat het cruciaal is om meerdere verschillende informatiebronnen te gebruiken en de inhoud kritisch in vraag te stellen.<\/p>\n
